1 Less Thing

Here, I will document my quest for decluttering my life by getting rid of 1 thing that I own, every day (by giving, selling, or throwing it away).

Keep what you remember

The idea of getting rid of one thing a day is fun and gimmicky, but since I’m moving to Buffalo in a few weeks, I need a faster method to scale my junk down to the essentials.  (Keep in mind the meaning of “essentials” varies greatly from person to person…)

Today I came up with an idea to really pare down stuff in a quick manner:

  • Take a pen/paper (or laptop) and leave your house/apartment
  • Make separate lists for each room in your house or categories of things you want to keep (“Kitchen”, “Personal”, “Entertainment”, etc.)
  • Now write down, from memory, everything you can think of as being essential to how you live your life.  If you’re unhappy with your current clutter-filled life, maybe I should say how you would like to live your life.
  • When you think you’re finished, go back to your house/apartment and set aside all of the stuff that you wrote down. Pack these essentials (if you’re moving that is).
  • The rest of the stuff in your house is the forgettable clutter that you probably don’t use.  Consider selling, giving away, or tossing everything that you didn’t write down.
